The Story Behind Sassafras Springs
Sassafras Springs Vineyard was founded in 2012 by the Gage family, who transformed a rolling hillside east of Springdale into Northwest Arkansas's premier wine destination. The property encompasses over 100 acres of pastoral Ozark landscape, with approximately 10 acres currently under vine cultivation and extensive room for expansion.
The property's centerpiece—the Chapel Ruins—was inspired by European stone chapels and specifically designed as a wedding ceremony venue. The stonework features recycled limestone from historic Arkansas buildings, giving the structure an authentically weathered appearance. Native Arkansas oak and cedar complement the stone, creating a structure that feels centuries old despite being built in the 2010s.
The vineyard produces estate-grown wines from vines planted on the property, supplemented by premium grapes sourced from Arkansas vineyards and neighboring states. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes approachable, food-friendly wines that showcase the unique terroir of the Ozarks. Popular varietals include Norton (Arkansas's signature red grape, known for deep color and complexity), Vignoles (a French-American hybrid producing aromatic whites), and Chambourcin (a versatile red grape).
In less than a decade, Sassafras Springs has become one of the most sought-after wedding venues in the region, hosting over 100 weddings annually. The combination of stunning architecture, panoramic vineyard views, exceptional hospitality, and award-winning wines creates experiences that couples and guests remember for a lifetime.
